Transparency, Data Sources & Legal Framework

Legal & Compliance Information

This project is an independent analytical initiative developed by Anthony Nick (Independent Analytics Lab). We provide spatial visualisations of official crime data to support public awareness and informed decision-making. The information presented on this website is based exclusively on publicly available, government-published datasets and is offered strictly as an informational resource.

1. Data Sources & Open Licences

Our maps are built using official crime records from each respective city or country, reused in full compliance with their governing open data licences:

  • New York City: Uses the NYPD Complaint Data (Historic) published under the NYC Open Data Law (Local Law 11 of 2012). Reuse complies with the NYC Open Data Terms of Use.

  • London: Uses official UK police data published under the UK Open Government Licence (OGL) , in accordance with the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

  • Paris: Uses French national crime statistics from the Ministère de l’Intérieur / SSMSI, published on data.gouv.fr under the Licence Ouverte / Etalab.

  • Berlin (and other German locations): Uses official crime statistics from the respective Landeskriminalamt (LKA) or state open data portals, where available, in compliance with German public sector information regulations.

All cartographic data displayed on our interactive maps is derived from OpenStreetMap (© OSM contributors) and used under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) . The interactive map interface is powered by the Leaflet library (BSD 2-Clause License).

2. No Government Affiliation

This website is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by any police department, city government, ministry of interior, or any other government agency. All datasets remain the property of their respective publishing authorities. The interpretations, analyses, and visualisations are solely those of the project author and do not represent official government assessments, risk ratings, or policy positions.

3. Important Limitations & Data Accuracy

Open government datasets are provided for public use but may contain inherent limitations. Before using our maps, please understand the following:

  • Reporting Bias: All data reflects only crimes that were formally reported and recorded by authorities. Reporting rates vary between neighbourhoods, and our maps do not estimate unreported crime.

  • Privacy Adjustments: For privacy reasons, many police datasets apply location generalisation:

    • In NYC and the UK, incidents are often snapped to the nearest intersection, street midpoint, or public place.

    • In Paris, only aggregated statistics by arrondissement are available; no street-level coordinates are published.

    • Certain sensitive categories (e.g., sexual offences in NYC) are geocoded to precinct addresses, not actual event locations.

  • Data Delays: Datasets may contain reporting delays, corrections, or occasional inaccuracies. The project does not independently verify every individual record.

  • No Real-Time Updates: The maps are based on complete annual datasets (e.g., full year 2025) and are updated only when new full-year data becomes available. They do not provide real-time monitoring.

4. What Our Maps Do NOT Provide

  • No safety guarantees or predictions: Historical records cannot predict future conditions, and crime patterns may change quickly.

  • No certification of any location as safe, unsafe, recommended, or to be avoided.

  • No professional security advice: Nothing on this website should be interpreted as professional security or travel advice. All decisions regarding travel, residence, movement, and personal safety remain solely your responsibility.
